Delonghi Voluntarily To Replace Control Panels On Oil-Filled Electric Heaters

Delonghi is providing free replacement control panels for oil-filled radiator-type electric heaters manufactured by DeLonghi S.p.A. from 1980 through 1988. DeLonghi is taking this action to correct what the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) considers to be potential fire hazards in some of the electric controls.

The heaters and humidifiers can overheat, presenting a fire hazard. Honeywell has received 56 reports of heaters overheating or catching fire, causing one minor injury, and six reports of humidifiers overheating or catching fire. Some of the fires relating to these heaters and humidifiers caused extensive damage. Only Duracraft model CZ-303, CZ-304, CZ-308, CZ-318, CZ-319 Heat Express and DeLonghi model CER-1 portable electric ceramic heaters are involved in this recall.

Consumer reports that a short circuit caused a fire inside a heater. Consumer states that the fire could be seen throught the vent of the heater. The heater had been on for about 30 minutes.

Fire Dept responded to a signal from a fire alarm inside a synagogue. They went in the bathroom and saw that the oil heater was on fire. They unplugged it from the wall. There was minor damage to the floor.

Consumers recently noticed some sparks occuring from plate on electric space heater located in their daughter's bedroom. They reportedly spark & then spread over small area of the plate, but anytime the space heater is heating up, sparks happen with some frequency.

I had this electric oil filled space heater set on the highest setting when I noticed plastic burning smell & the timer on the unit was making a humming noise. Later, I heard a loud "pop", saw a spark fly out of the front of the unit & smoke came out of the front top of unit.

Oil-filled heater caught fire because cord frayed or melted enough to caused hot & neutral wires to short. Cord doesn't have reinforced protector where it attaches to unit, & it enters through bottom of unit, concealing any cord damage. 22 MOF & 3 YOF were there.

37 YOM consumer reports that their space heater tripped and they later noticed that some shirts in the closet were on fire. The fire marshall indicates that the fire started from the space heater and the outlet it was plugged into.

The Submitter reported that a teenage boy [12-YO] was sleeping in his bed with a portable electric space heater almost directly next to the bed. While sleeping, some of the blankets and the child's pillow covered the top of the heater and caught fire. No injury reported.
