Robert Bosch Tool Recalls Dremel Rotary Tool Due to Burn Hazard

This recall involves the Dremel MICRO Model 8050 Rotary Tool with date codes 407 through 505. The model number and date codes are located on the name plate of the product, which is on the side opposite the Dremel logo. Products are dark gray with a silver label and blue control buttons and have 8V lithium ion batteries.

Rotary tool has a removal battery that also doubles as a hand grip. The battery cannot be locked to the tool properly. When the battery come loose, the top portion could come off and cause damages. It runs at 20K RPM & some attachments are for cutting.

When power button was pressed to turn of the rotary tool, it failed to turn off. The rotary engine began spinning at a greater rate of speed than normal operation. The unit parts began to rattle around inside the case. The case began to heat rapidly & spew smoke.

The consumer stated that while in the charging stand, the dremel turned itself on and would not turn off until the charged battery died.

Cordless rotary tool turned itself on during night. It took three pushes of off button to turn off. Tool was hot & was placed aside charging cradle. Few minutes later it smelled of electrical/plastic & it was so hot that consumer had to take it out using pot holder.

After using the Rotary Tool, my daughter wasn't even doing anything to it- she was just putting it away and it started freaking out when it wasn't on and it caught fire.

The consumer, 38, stated that the rotary tool that he uses for shaping or sanding little pieces of wood works fine for first 2 mins, then it becomes very warm and then extremely hot in his hand, to the point his hand felt burned for several minutes(injury reported).

The Consumer reported that the carbon steel wire brushes used in the power tools come apart when in use - the little wires fly out of the tool. He stated that he has noticed this several times and wears safety glasses. He said you feel them hitting you as you use the tool.
