General Electric Recalls Gas Dryers Due to Shock Hazard

  • Date: 2/11/2008

A short circuit in the dryer's wiring poses a shock hazard to consumers with ungrounded dryers. GE gas dryers model number DWXR463GGWW with serial numbers starting with AM, TL, SL, VL, and ZL are included in this recall.

Whirlpool Recalls Washer and Gas Dryer Units

  • Date: 7/2/2002

The gas dryer can overheat, posing a fire hazard. The recalled 24-inch washer and gas dryer units were sold under the Whirlpool, Kenmore and General Electric brand names, which is written on the control panel of the units. They are white or light tan.

Electric Dryer was turned on cotton setting. Consumer stated that after about 15 minutes they smelled electrical fire & saw smoke. It was discovered after removing top of unit that control panel circuit board had caught fire.

A 40 YOM report that an electric Clothes Dryer had an internal wiring issue that during use caused a short & large blue sparks were seen from the front of the dryer. The lights in the house dimmed when the sparks occurred. The unit was unplugged. The wires,drum were scorched.

Gas dryer caught on fire inside housing & under drum. This was caused by built up of lint in area of combustion tube. With back pressure on blower and ill fitting 'seal' on joint, lint was forced out of exhaust duct into inside of dryer housing. 31 YOF shut down dryer.

The consumer says this gas dryer is a fire hazard because of lint accumulations. She says an authorised tech found the dryer so hot he was surprised a fire didn't happen. He said the lint trap was inadequate and the only way to clean out the lint is to go on the roof monthly.

Electric dryer stopped working. Technician was called to repair the unit; pulled the front panel and discovered the cause of the failure was a wire harness fire. We were lucky that the fire was contained by the sheet metal and no clothes were in the dryer at the time.

When the consumer turned the knob clockwise, knob broke & fell on the dryer. Immediately after the control panel (that was behind the knob) fell on the dryer & consumer felt a strong shock come in from his left hand and go throughout his body. Didn't seek medical attention.

The first time I used my gas dryer, I smelled gas. The dryer is in the basement & gas was smelled in the bedroom above the dryer. The factory service said it is normal to smell gas when the dryer starts up. The technician said the gas dryer was hooked up correctly.

Consumer reports that the electrical wires on the control board of the dryer burned. This produced a vapor and smell that permeated the clothes inside. This occurred twice. A technician states that there was short in the control board. The board was replaced.

Consumer's electric dryer had large clumps of lint at the base of the exterior vent with little or no lint in the lint trap. Tech advised this is common. Consumer took the front off, there was a ball of lint about the size of a grapefruit in the blower section.

Consumer reported that gas dryer is allowing raw gas to enter drum without flame ignition because of malfunction that manufacturer can't determine. Safety sensors are allowing gas to continue to flow into appliance & into home unless dryer is manually shut down.

A fire investigator reported that the drum of the clothes dryer was rubbing against the front face and wore through until it rubbed the two wires leading to the door closed switch. A fire occurred when the door was opened and sparks caught a towel in the drum on fire.

Combination washer/dryer had sparks fly out from the dials for the dryer when it was turned on. It would flip the breaker switch & turn off. Repair man did not observe problem & did no repairs. Problem happened more frequently

Consumer reports that the dryer caught on fire at home. The dryer was in use when the consumer checked on it saw smoke coming out of it. A faulty circuit board was producing sparks. Consumer opened the door to stop the cycle and unplugged the dryer.

Electric Dryer overheated & ruined load of clothes & melted flap on outside vent for dryer. Consumer was taking clothes out & clothes were so hot that consumer burned hand. Heating element kept heating until it was unsafe condition. Service technician replaced thermostat.

The consumer stated that the smoke was coming from the top of the electric clothes dryer unit. The display on the top of the dryer melted. The consumer unplugged the unit and removed the unit to the garage.
