Goodman Recalls Air Handlers Due to Electrical Shock Hazard

This recall involves Goodman air handler models AWUF and ACNF (A = Air Handler; W = Wall Mount; C = Ceiling Mount; U = Unpainted; N = Uncased; F = Flowrater). The recalled air handlers are most often installed in apartment and condominium units and are used with heating and cooling systems to provide climate control. The AWUF model units are wall mounted, while ACNF model units are ceiling mounted. The recalled air handlers have serial numbers beginning with 1511, 1512, or 1601 through 1610.

Consumer stated that when heating was turned on in the home heating & cooling system, it smelled awful like house burning. They found the odor coming from the heater and shut it down. The burning metal odor was still persisting and would make consumer cough and tight in chest

A 59 YOM has experienced a premature failure of an indoor evaporator coil on a heat pump/AC. The system would have been running inefficiently at his home. Not sure because of the leaking refrigerant, but he experienced heart arrhythmia & lung issues.

There were over 6 instances of blower motor relays failing in wall mounted heat pumps in one of apartment complexes. The relays are smoking the apartments up and setting off the smoke detectors. Approximately 25 relays have been swapped out. No structural damage occurred.

The consumer reported that the heat pump broke down. Technicians came out, but the issue has not been resolved. The consumer stated that the fan motors failed and the unit is unable to cool the home putting his family's health in jeopardy.

FD responded to several incidents involving HVAC relay board. The relay on these circuit boards are arcing & burning causing them to fill the apartment units with smoke. No injuries have been reported & all incidents have been contained within HVAC units.

Submitter reported that the circuit board of HVAC with relay attached is arcing under electrical load causing small fires and apartments to fill with smoke. Relay is part that is arcing. Agency has responded to multiple incidents over past two years.

Coils inside of heat/air conditioner was leaking & technician refilled refrigerant. Consumer noticed unusual odor in home prior to refill of refrigerant. Same date of repair consumer’s wife began to feel dizzy & nausea & went to seek medical attention.

COnsumer purchased heat pump & it began leaking gas 3 to 4 months & continued to leak gas. Company has replaced compressor, copper lines, & added coolant. Consumer believes this malfunction could cause his wife to become ill.

Air handler A/C heating equipment overheated causing fire. Consumer was awoke by alarm & smoke in home. He disconnected unit. He stated that he inhaled smoke came through ducts. Technician noticed that unit circuit board was severely burnt. Circuit board was replaced.
