W.C. Wood Company Inc. Announce Recall of Upright Freezers and Single Door Refrigerators
Name of product: automatic defrost upright freezers and all-refrigerators. The defrost heater coil can become exposed inside the units, which poses a potential shock hazard to consumers. In some cases the exposed heater wire can also melt, or burn the unit's interior plastic food liner. The recalled single door freezers and refrigerators are 15, 17 and 20-cubic foot Automatic Defrost Upright Freezers and 17-cubic foot Automatic Defrost All-Refrigerators that can be converted into freezers. They were sold under the brand names Amana, Crosley, Danby, Maytag, Whirlpool and Wood's, which is written on the front of the unit.

Name of product: Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand refrigerators. An electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigeratorвЂ™s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard. The recall includes certain Maytag, Jenn-Air, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side by side and top freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. Sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from January 2001 through January 2004 for between about $350 and $1600.

62 YOF says agent failed to put all the bolts in the center hinge of a refrigerator. Without the bolt in the solid right side bolt hole, the weight of the doors eventually pulls the center hinge from under the open left side claw foot holes. The doors fall on the operator.
while consumer was in the kitchen she heard a loud explosion & noticed that there was smoke coming from the rear of refrigerator. her spouse immediately powered it off from the circuit breaker, it was removed from the wall to unplug it & she noticed that the plug was charred.
Refrigerator started making a strange noise & white smoke started coming out from bottom right side. consumer unplugged the fridge & a huge amount of black smoke came out & filled the kitchen but the noise then stopped immediately.
Consumer states started having problems with the refrigerator soon after the 1-year warranty expired. The unit would not stay cool and the freezer would go into overdrive with heavy frost build up. Latest, the unit started smoking from the area of the light bulbs.
Consumer reports that the relay on the refrigerator's compressor failed causing the compressor to overheat. Consumer says there was a strong smell of smoke, the whole unit was extremely hot. Consumer says just found this unit has been recalled.

Consumer reports that the refrigerator caused a fire in her home resulting in extensive damage to the interior, loss of many memorable personal items and her family to be displaced. Consumer says there was a recall but she never received a recall notice.
Consumer reports that the refrigerator is totally warm and won't cool anything. All the food was spoiled. Consumer says the relay switch tries to kick the compressor but it won't. Consumer says having same issue as in release #09-145, but the serial number doesn't match.
23 YOF reports that the defrost unit of the refrigerator is not working properly. The consumer has had to thaw out the coils three times and the refrigerator side is not as cold as it should be. The outer panel and the middle where the doors meet are very hot to the touch.
Consumer smelled burning smell. Interior temperature of refrigerator had risen to about 90 degrees. All of food was spoiled & freezer contents had melted. Consumer unplugged refrigerator for safety reasons. Technician found that compressor was defective/burned out.

Consumer's refrigerator two years ago started to smelled like burned plastic. Technician diagnosed that water fountain module melted internally. Consumer stopped using water fountain features. Consumer is concerned that her refrigerator could poses a fire hazard.

The front of the refrigerator is very hot to the touch & hot enough to cause food stored in the freezer door to not freeze, almost but not quite melting. Adjusting the controls does not correct the problem. consumer believes this is a fire hazard.

Consumer's tenant came home to find refrigerator on fire. He was able to unplug it & extinguish flame. Consumer believes that fire began in relay that cycles comressor on and off.
Consumer and his wife were awakened by smoke alarm and noticed thick smoke in their house. They noticed flames coming from the rear of the refrigerator, a few inches above the compressor. Refrigerator is no longer functional.
the start relay of double door refrigerator was smoking & has melted down. The consumer walked in to the kitchen & found smoking at the ceiling in his kitchen. The refrigerator also emitted a burning odor. consumer pulled the plug from the outlet in order to stop smoking.
Consumer reports that at 5:30 a.m. she got up and smelled toxic fumes in the air inside the house, similar to an electrical/plastic burning smell. She says fire. dept was contacted and it was determined to be coming from the refrigerator. Consumer says suffered injury.
Refrigerator was leaking water from the freezer. Consumer discovered that one side of coils, is melted...interior plastic liner of the freezer is melted in one section and discolored brownish...from what appears to be burning.

Consumer reported that refrigerator started to shoot out water all over kitchen floor. It started to smoke from panel & flame came out & consumer could smell burning plastic. Refrigerator was unplugged & was discovered that inside of ice dispenser melted & smoking.
consumer noticed smoke coming from the rear of refrigerator. Fire Department advised the consumer that the electrical failure was with the relay in the refrigerator. The unit was unplugged to prevent any further use.
After 47 YOF washed bottom glass shelf from her refrigerator with warm water in sink, it 'exploded' into thousands of small pieces. She wasn't hurt. Shelf was sitting on a table for about 10 minutes before it was washed.
6 YOF was opening bottom drawer of refrigerator when handle came off & cut her left arm. Manufacturer's technician simply wants to put the handle back on despite the consumer's concerns that this was the part that cause the injury. 6 YOF received first aid.
Consumer smelled strong smell like plastic burning & heard popping noise like something electrical. Consumer noticed that refrigerator & Freezer were 67 degrees. Compressor & circuit board were melted.
Relay to compressor in 74 YOF's refrigerator failed, resulting in some smoke. Compressor would not turn on & food spoiled.
Consumer heard popping & clicking noise & smelled burning odor coming from refrigerator. When opening doors to refrigerator & freezer she noticed that it wasn’t cooling. It was unplugged & panel was removed where she noticed relay to compressor had melted.
Compressor relay or related parts in refrigerator caught fire. Parts in location of relay melted & partially burned through their housing. Circuit breaker powering refrigerator did not trip; however, consumers were able to cut main power to house.

Consumer reports that the refrigerator caught on fire causing damage to the floor, cabinet and wall.
Consumer stated that he noticed that freezer side of refrigerator was emitting smoke. Water & ice were coming out of side of refrigerator. He unplugged unit & when opened cover of ice dispenser he founded that circuit board had melted. Water made damage to his floor.
Consumer's refrigerator has drip pan that can't be removed & it fills up with mold. Her son has been ill with allergies. She also felt sick after attempting to clean drip pan in her refrigerator.
consumer stated the unit melted the cover inside the refrigerator. The consumer opened up the unit & it was full of smoke. consumer noticed that it had gotten warm inside the unit before & has been inconsistent.
61 YOM's refrigerator shows signs of burning near rear of unit, in freezer side where cooling unit is located.

consumer reported that shelves in the refrigerator fall out at least a few times a month. They do not securely stay attached to the interior door panel on refigerator side. 43 yof sustained cut to her feet, bruise and break toes when items from the unit come crashing down.
Refrigerator/freezer compressor controller module burned out. Refrigerator would no longer cool or freeze. Repair technician who fixed refrigerator advised consumer that this was a very common problem with consumer's refrigerator brand.
Refrigerator is leaking water from front corner where door is located. Consumer stated that there is no icemaker, no water dispenser to cause this failure. This began 3-4 months ago. She believes that this leak could cause electrocution or injury due to fall hazard.
Consumer received phone call stating that his house was filled with smoke. Fire department cut off breaker & turned it back on. They heared refrigerator going & smoke emitting from unit. They pulled it out, hosed it down, & sat it outside.
Consumer reports that the relay for defrost in the refrigerator stayed on too long which caused the liner in the freezer compartment to melt and burn. Consumer said the defrost board had been replaced 3 times within the last 8 years.
Consumer noticed rotten smell & found that food in refrigerator was spoiled & parts of refrigerator & freezer were burned. Something was glowing in bottom portion of freezer. Consumer stated that he had prior issues with ice maker (it was completely frozen) & it was replaced.
Consumer smelled burnt plastic in kitchen. consumer found the relay switch connected to compressor had flames coming out from bottom of relay when compressor turned on. The smoke was drawn to the fan on left side & activated smoke alarm. consumer unplugged my refrigerator.

Consumer heard fizzing noise and room filled with smoke. After fire department removed back pane of refrigerator, compressor was glowing red, insulation was damaged, & electrical connector was melted.

A 49 YOM reports that a refrigerator was source of strong electrical burning smell but seemed to be otherwise functional. The consumer stated that the source of smell was small fire around the power connector for main compressor.
The consumer stated that they moved the refrigerator 5 feet during remodeling of their ktchen. When it was moved back to the original area and plugged in, it began smoking and caught on fire. During the first year, there were 3 service calls for rattling or vibration.
The consumer reported that refrigerator started a fire in the kitchen.
After retrieving vegatables from crisper,71 YOF raised herself, up striking her head on the protruding (with sharp corner) handle of the refrigerator freezer door. She has had daily headaches since. She received no first aid or medical treatment.
The consumer reports that his refrigerator burned the relay ignition and the wiring. He is concerned that by the time the parts will arrive and fixed, his food will be spoiled.
Fire began in refrigerator in garage. Refrigerator, contents, adjacent wall, loft above, & some surrounding items have been damaged. 42 YOM used fire extinguisher. Fire department was called. Fire Marshall determined that refrigerator was cause of fire & it was on recall.
Consumer smelled electrical burning smell. She unplugged refrigerator, cleaned back of unit, & plugged it back in. Odor resurfaced. Her son took off back panel of refrigerator & when it was plugged back in, there wa a flame that ignited near the compressior.
The consumer stated that hr heard a noise in the kitchen and smelled electrical burning. He realized the smell was coming from the refrigerator. He pulled the refrigerator out and noticed a fire in the rear bottom section of the unit about 1-2 inch off the floor.

54 YOF stated that breaker was blown which knocked out lights. She smelled electrical burning next to refrigerator & saw orange glow behind it, that turned to flames coming from bottom in back. Unit was dragged out of garage, & fire was put out. It left burn marks on floor.
Maytag Epic MBF2258XEW1
The end of the drain is too narrow for all the melted water to drain into the drain pan during the defrost cycle. The water that remains refreezes until the next defrost cycle when it melts & refreezes. The water started leaking & created a slip & fall hazard to a 76 YOM.
One of consumers almost [swallowed] & choked on [white] piece of plastic that came out of automatic ice dispenser of refrigerator. Later his daughter got another piece of plastic in her drink. Plastic pieces on both sides of metal auger broke off identically.
39 YOM reported that ice maker of refrigerator suddenly caught on fire. The bottom of the unit melted. Consumer stated that he was injured, no 1st aid or medical attention received.
Consumer reported that this refrigerator was found to have melted relay that didn't cause a major fire but could have. Consumer stated that electrical failure in relay, component that turns on refrigerator's compressor, can cause overheating & pose serious fire hazard.
Consumer reported that defrosting heater by water tank in refrigerator caught fire & melted tray which dispersed black soot everywhere inside refrigerator. She stated that circuit breaker tripped which prevented fire in her house.
The consumer stated that their refrigerator caught on fire. They saw a fire under the refrigerator. They quickly unplugged it and removed the back grill, cleaned the area out and discovered that the fire came from the capacitor.

Consumer reported that refrigerator is not cooling causing food damages, consuming excessive energy, water leaking under door & ice stopping up in dispenser.
Consumer stated that she noticed that light bulb burnt hole in refrigerator where it was located. When door of unit was opened she smelled burning odor & saw incident. She reported that bulb was removed & refrigerator is still in operation.
The fire department responded to a garage fire. They didn't rule out a refrigerator as a possible cause of this fire.
Consumer stated that handle of freezer in refrigerators with freezer on top stick out several inches, making possible to hit someone head. She hit her head many times & once she hit it hard enough to knock her out & down to floor, she didn’t receive 1st aid.

The consumer stated that the refrigerator caught fire. The consumer stated that other models have had recalls for the same issue, but his. The consumer stated that the switch that starts the compressor went up in smoke.
Fire marshal's office pin-pointed the point-of-origin of residential fire (single family home) to be refrigerator. No one was home or injured at time of fire incident; however two family dogs perished in fire & there was extensive building & contents damage.
Consumer heard buzz/sizzle sound in kitchen followed by slight whiff of electrical burn. Within 30 seconds kitchen was filling up with smoke coming from under refrigerator. She saw sparks & unplugged unit. She saw connector to compressor & wires into it were charred black.

The consumer stated that the refrigerator caught fire. The consumer stated that the unit that plugs into the compressor caught fire.
We noticed that the house smelled funny & VOC numbers had jumped very high. I heard a crackling noise & my husband realized that it was the refrigerator. He opened up the back of it and flames shot out of I think the compressor. It was basically an electrical fire.
75 YOF reports that she found a sharp and jagged piece of plastic inside the ice cub dispensed by the ice cube maker in the refrigerator. The ice cube maker was replaced under warranty. A year later, the same issue occurred with the new ice maker.
My 8-year-old daughter was getting ice from our refrigerator's ice maker when a large shard of plastic fell into her cup. We investigated and found that part of the ice maker had cracked into several pieces. We emptied the bin & we think we removed all the plastic pieces.
51 YOF stated that fridge kept overheating. Items are melting in freezer. This happens for about three & half years after purchase. She got fan motor part less than year ago, but problem resumed, spoiling food. She got food poisoning, was seen by medical professional.
59 YOM opened door to put food in freezer side of refrigerator & bumped wire that starts ice maker. It started to run & started giving off sparks, smoke & flames. He had to disconnect power for whole house & fire stopped after couple minutes. Spot melted into freezer's wall.
36 YOM consumer reports that the refrigerator was making a loud noise and giving off a burnt plastic smell. Upon investigating the source he discovered that the compressor relay had failed and was arcing. There was a large flame at the back of the unit. Fire hazard.
65 YOM consumer reports that he found a piece of hard plastic in his glass from the ice dispenser. He found that part of the ice holding tray had broken off and was coming through the dispenser. This could be ingested or perhaps cut someone. Unsafe.
Consumer reports that the ice maker on the refrigerator began dispensing shards of plastic. The auger end cap was chipping and shards were getting into the ice maker. This is incredibly dangerous and could have been swallowed and resulted in injury.
The consumer reported, that both portions of her refrigerator stopped cooling. The technician came out and told her that the compressor had stopped working. Approximately five year prior to that, the ice maker stopped working and a technician had to repair it.
The Consumer stated that the ice maker in the freezer of their refrigerator caught fire overnight and burned most of the way through the side of the freezer and generated copious nasty smoke.
Refrigerator gets extremely hot on outside of freezer & where freezer closes. For several months. unit will eventually cool down, but outside of refrigerator still remains warm. Then it will get really hot to touch again. Ice in holding compartment melt together.
Consumer reports that the refrigerator ignited internally while no one was touching it. They inhaled blac smoke as a result of the fire. This is a fire hazard.
The consumer has a safety concern about the refrigerator. He noticed, that the ice maker in the refrigerator stopped working and when someone came to check the product, live wires were found to be coming out of the bottom of the freezer.
Consumers report that their refrigerator is defective, it was sold with patch job. Their refrigerator stopped running & the repairman told them that there was a leak in the refrigerant's copper tube & it was repaired by wrapping putty around the tube. No Injuries.
The submitter from FD reported, that a detached garage structure suffered an interior fire and a smoke damage due to the ice maker of the refrigerator malfunction.
